Big Energy Savings for Special Needs School

School children playing on a swing in the park

Sheiling School is set in a beautiful woodland campus and provides education for children with special needs. With the price of energy set to add £10,000s to their annual energy bill, the school wanted to find practical ways to reduce costs whilst also helping them improve their environmental impact across a dozen different buildings, each with its own energy challenges.

The school chose Greener Energy Futures as an ideal partner to help tackle energy and carbon reduction; with experience helping dozens of other schools reduce energy bills and source funding to support measures, Greener Energy Futures were able to survey the site and identify an immediate potential to save £23,000 through energy management projects, most with paybacks close to or less than 5 years. Further, the measures could reduce the school’s carbon footprint by 40 tonnes annually, making it fit for the future by shifting away from fossil fuels.

Additionally, Greener Energy Futures helped the school apply for grant-funding for some of the energy-saving interventions which could help kick-start the programme of measures.

“As a charity, it’s vital that we are prudent with our costs so that we can deliver the best service to the children we support; and the extra energy costs were a concern, so we were delighted that Greener Energy Futures could help us not only find saving but also support us in applying for funding and bringing installation experts to deliver the savings. The way that we affect the environment is something deeply important to us as an organisation, so being able to reduce our environmental impact helps us achieve those ethical goals that we set ourselves.”
— Sam Hembury, Head of Resource, Sheiling School
